Nicole Zepeda

Writer, Nightmare on AIDS Street (2000 South Texas Contest Winner)

"My high school graduating class started out freshman year a little more than 750 kids. We graduated a little less than 350. We have a high drop out rate and teen pregnancy rate, and a lot of it has to do with education. The younger communities aren’t educated enough about STDs and HIV awareness."

- Nicole Zepeda

To write Nightmare on AIDS Street, Nicole Zepeda used complex imagery and symbolism that illustrated how her peers in San Juan, TX experience their fear of getting tested for HIV/AIDS. Nicole wanted to draw these fears out into the open to show that they can be overcome and that more active, informed decision-making can preempt the “nightmare” of getting tested.

Nicole is graduating from the University of Austin in Spring 2007 with a major in Film, Radio and Television and has already established a remarkable career as a filmmaker. In fact, Nicole just shot and edited the Behind-the-Scenes film for Me, Myself and I, the latest Scenarios USA film to come out of South Texas.
