Whitney

Writer, Who I Am (2006 Miami-Dade Contest Winner)

"[Who I Am is about] learning to be your own person and not necessarily the label people put on you because of the way you act, the way you were born. It's about not modeling yourself after something else but letting yourself develop... How to find a path in the world if you don't like the path that people give to you."

- Whitney Peters

Whitney Peters was already an experienced activist before writing Who I Am—she had even made a film for her TV Production class prior to the Scenarios writing contest about a girl who strikes out on her own to become an activist. Whitney saw the 2006 “What’s the REAL DEAL?” writing contest as a perfect opportunity to explore how young people shape their identities based on intersecting factors such as race, class, peers, community and sexuality. What was most important to Whitney in writing Who I Am was to communicate the significance of “letting yourself develop” beyond the boundaries of identity labels.

Whitney grew up in Coconut Grove in Miami, FL and graduates from MAST Academy in Spring 2007. Whitney is passionate about pushing gay rights issues onto the human rights agenda, likening current debates around gay rights to a modern-day civil rights movement. She plans to attend film school in either Miami or New York City.
