Tiara Bennett

Tiara

Writer, The Choices We Make (2006 New York City Contest Winner)

"I just wanted to switch things up because I do not believe people should be put into categories according to their gender…I’m excited to have this story contribute to the conversation on teen pregnancy and fatherhood in my community."

- Tiara Bennett

Tiara Bennett wrote The Choices We Make for a night-school health class taught by Gloria Jung, who also taught 2004 NYC Contest Winner Chantel Woolridge, writer of All Falls Down. Tiara’s goal was to communicate something fresh about how young women and young men handle unexpected pregnancy, focusing on mature decision-making and a loving, trusting relationship. She successfully weaved a complex narrative about how young people view themselves, their futures and their relationships.

Tiara grew up in a tight-knit neighborhood in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Clara Barton High School in 2006 and recently began attending college at Georgia Southern University. Since Tiara has always been a prolific writer, especially of poetry, she plans to minor in Journalism while she studies Physical Therapy.
