- Randy Walton
In 2000, five young men incarcerated at Rikers Island's Detention Center won the Scenarios USA “What’s the REAL DEAL?” writing contest. Today, Randy Walton, who wrote the film The Monster with Naeqwan Clarke, Jarel Turner, and Brinton Newson, is starting a new life on the outside.
Randy grew up in Baychester, NY and attended Truman High School in the Bronx. He is currently training to be a substance abuse case-management counselor for August Community, with a focus on adolescents.
Randy has distinguished himself by working to remove the stigma that keeps people from dealing with HIV and AIDS. Considering that the United States Department of Justice reports (in 2002) an overall rate of confirmed AIDS cases in the prison population nearly 3½ times the rate in the U.S. general population, Randy’s contribution is especially urgent. Randy is determined to see The Monster used in transitional facilities to help those re-entering society and get it into more high schools and community centers.
