Sophia Tavernakis

Writer, Lipstick (2002 National West Contest Winner)

"I wanted to make the kind of film that kids might pay $7 to see if it was two hours long. The kind of film that gives you something to relate to, so that when you are done, you think, 'This is something that could actually happen'."

- Sophia Tavernakis

My name is Sophia Tavernakis. I’m a big fan of photography and watching independent films. I'm currently studying Forensic Psychology at Orange Coast Community College.

I was first introduced to Scenarios while working as a Peer Educator for Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties. I was excited to get involved in a project where I would be able to collaborate creatively with my peers. During the filmmaking process, I spent a lot of time picking all the crew members’ brains, figuring out what they were all about and what their jobs entailed. In the end, I found we were all just normal people. I also particularly liked meeting all of the winning writers from other contest regions at the screening in New York and seeing how well their personalities were portrayed through their films.

Recent Updates: Sophia is currently helping her mother open a women's retail shop in Orange County. She plans to transfer to John J. College of Criminal Justice next fall to continue her degree in Forensic Psychology. Sophia wants to be an FBI agent.
