Roxy Garcia

Writer, Lipstick (2002 National West Contest Winner)

"[My parents] are a little more open minded with my brother than me... they think I’m more likely to become pregnant than for him to get someone pregnant. I think things should be more equal, but I know that parents are a little more concerned with females and I think they should try to be a little more equal."

- Roxanna Garcia

Roxanna Garcia wrote Lipstick with Simone Lance, Emily Alvarez, Sophia Tavernakis and Dan Barnard as peer educators for Planned Parenthood in Orange County, CA. Roxy and her fellow peer educators felt that a lot of sex health education and awareness was geared towards heterosexual youth, while issues especially affecting gay and lesbian teens such as coming out and peer acceptance remained relatively unexplored. The young writers decided to tackle these subjects head-on in Lipstick, a bold decision that earned them the valuable experience of successfully overcoming community challenges to the film’s content.

Roxy still works with Planned Parenthood and is currently completing prerequisites to attend nursing school. Roxy plans to continue working with Planned Parenthood because of its commitment to comprehensive and progressive health care.
