National HIV Testing Day (NHTD)
June 27, 2010
Monster
Every year, on June 27th, local organizations across the nation engage with communities to promote early diagnosis and HIV-testing. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one out of five people living with HIV in the U.S. are unaware of their HIV status. NHTD is an opportunity for people nationwide to learn their HIV status, and to gain knowledge to take control of their health and their lives.

Let your students know where they can get tested: http://www.hivtest.org/

What's the REAL DEAL about the media, gender and relationships?
Scenarios USA at NYC Healthy Teen Relationships Conference
NYC
healthy teen On May 21st, Scenarios USA Speakers Bureau and 2007 REAL DEAL winner Phillesia Mackenzie and I co-facilitated a workshop for teens and their teachers for the Healthy Teen Relationships Conference. The conference was co-hosted by Men Can Stop Rape and the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence.

The workshop was very lively as we talked about how gender is policed in schools by peers and teachers, especially through the use of language. We showed Phillesia's film, Misunderstood, which looks closely at the pressures on young men to perform masculinity in distinct ways in their relationships. We finished the workshop with the participants working in groups to create visual displays about how gender, sexuality and race are portrayed in advertising (pictured).
