Hello Curriculum Corner Reader,

As always, we appreciate your reading and please do continue to send us comments and suggestions.

Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness

On March 10th, National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, we recognized the unique risks HIV/AIDS poses for women and girls; raised awareness of the disease's increasing impact on this population; and encouraged women and girls to know their HIV status by getting tested for HIV.

Women face some unique challenges that may place them at risk for acquiring HIV. For example, women may lack control and financial autonomy in their relationships, making it difficult to refuse sex, negotiate condom use, or insist on fidelity. This lack of control may result in unprotected sexual activity that places women at greater risk for contracting HIV.

If you're looking for great resources to talk about young women and HIV, check out these films from our Scenarios USA HIV/AIDS compilation:

Reflections Reflections: (Written in partnership with BET's Rap It Up campaign). Three best friends learn to take the risk of HIV/AIDS seriously as they navigate romantic relationships in an urban environment mired in economic strife, drugs, and limited options.

Just Like You Imagined? Just Like You Imagined?: A glimpse into the lives of six young people dealing with the pressures of dating and relationships.

Nightmare on AIDS StreetNightmare on AIDS Street: 17-year old Isabel knows she can't take back what happened during one hazy night with a guy. She decides to take responsibility and bravely face her greatest fear.

All our films were written by teens, for teens, and directed by Hollywood filmmakers. They address topics such as relationships; communication; peer pressure; prevention and testing; choices and responsibility. Each film comes with a lesson plan and behind-the-scenes documentary.

National Day of Silence

Who I Am
Who I am girls
The National Day of Silence is a project of the LGBTQ community and their supporters. This project is a yearly student-run day of action to protest and bring awareness to the discrimination, harassment and bullying that LGBTQ students experience in school. For one day, students all over the country take a vow of silence to symbolize the silencing experienced by LGBTQ students.

An Advocates for Youth Project

Amplify Your Voice! is a project of Advocates for Youth, a nonprofit that support the efforts in helping young people everywhere make responsible and smart decisions about their reproductive and sexual health.

Through Amplify, youth around the world can work together to help achieve this vision. Young people will come together to demand reproductive justice,  access to information and services for all young people, and a more open, honest approach to sex and sexuality. We'll show our communities and elected officials that when we are given our rights and when we are respected, we will act responsibly.
