February 12, 2008: V-Day Films!

V-day is about more than chocolates, flowers, and teddy bears...

February 14, 2008
The meaning of V-day as you grew up knowing it has changed.
V-day is about more than chocolates, flowers, and teddy bears.
The ‘V’ is symbolic of not only Valentine, but now Victory, and Vagina.

V-day is a global movement, it’s predominantly focused on fighting violence against women and girls but essentially it’s about empowering women.

Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. In 2006, over 2700 V-Day benefit events took place by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. (1)

V-Day will be honored until Victory when there is no longer violence of any kind against women.

Who I Am...where two young women confront their sexuality at the crossroads of race and class
Lipstick… Emily hangs with her friends, plays soccer and looks forward to graduation. She also has a secret girlfriend. Will her friends still love her when she comes out?

These films send out a great V-day message. They show young women and girls learning to be true to themselves, regardless of social and peer pressures.
